St. John Ambulance believes that anyone, anywhere can benefit physically and emotionally from experiencing the unconditional love of a dog.
Hospitals, nursing homes, homes for aged, group homes, etc. can be scary or lonely places for many people. St. John Ambulance believes that a visit from a specially trained 'SJA therapy dog' can bring encouragement, joy, acceptance and love into these environments. It is generally acknowledged by the health care community that contact with pets has a calming effect, lowering blood pressure and relieving tension. Not only do these pets provide a loving and nuturing environment, but the patients and residents they visit show physical and psychological improvements!
Any dog of sound temperament can be evaluated to become a Therapy Dog regardless of breed or size. The St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program assesses each dog's temperament to ensure their suitability for the program. The program also assesses the handlers awareness and ability to understand and respond to their dog. We look for dogs that enjoy being around people, are well mannered, good tempered, and not easily spooked. We look for people that enjoy being around other people and who are willing to make a commitment to share their dog with others in the community.

Note: Our evaluations are generally held in the fall of each year.
