First Aid Tips

Over the years, St. John has developed considerable expertise in first aid procedures and protocols. Each month we are going to share that knowledge by posting a first aid tip of the month. Come back and check the site often for updates. Remember: Take First Aid, Learn CPR, and carry a First Aid Kit.

-- Fractures and Sprains

Do not move the casualty unless he/she is in danger. Dress any wounds to stop bleeding and to prevent further contamination. Protect any protruding bones with a dressing and ring pad, but do not force bones back into the wound. Immobilize an injured limb before moving the patient. Secure the limb to a padded splint ensuring the joint above and the joint below the injury have been immobilized. Check for signs of a pulse beyond the fracture or joint injury.

Treat all sprains as fractures with the following addition: apply gentle pressure with a bandage and apply an ice pack to the joint to reduce pain and control swelling. Elevate the limb, if possible. Always reassure the patient and keep him/her warm to minimize shock. Keep checking to see that the bandage is not cutting off circulation.
